about

Stay Cool is dedicated to pianist and composer Chris McGregor. Bra Tete first met McGregor in Cape Town and they appeared on the same bill at the 1962 Cold Castle Festival when McGregor was leading his septet and Bra Tete was playing piano with the Jazz Giants (featuring Nik Moyake and Dudu Pukwana who later formed The Blue Notes with McGregor). McGregor introduced Bra Tete to Ronnie Beer and encouraged the formation of Beer’s Swinging City Six with Bra Tete on piano. Beer’s group shared joint first prize with The Chris McGregor Septet at the 1963 Cold Castle Festival, the year that Bra Tete was also awarded the piano prize. McGregor consistently championed Bra Tete’s music: he featured ‘Linda’s Thoughts’ in Cape Town at the 1963 jazz and poetry event ‘Beyond the Blues’ with Zakes Mokae and The Blue Notes; recorded his music in Europe; and, when presenting four radio programmes on mbaqanga for Denis Duerden’s series African Writers’ Club in London, he explained that the ‘Thethe’ in Dudu Pukwana’s composition ‘Nick Thethe’ was “Tete Mbambisa… a wonderful pianist and composer, who is at present leading a big band in Johannesburg”.
