about

One for Asa was written for Asakhanya, Bra Tete’s granddaughter. In talking about The Voices, a vocal group Bra Tete had with his wife Mam’ Vuyiswa Ngcwangu, he pointed out that he has always mixed U.S. jazz with South African music and it is this mixing that ensured the success of records like Tete’s Big Sound. In One for Asa the traditional four measure marabi sequence – in this case F-Bb-F/C-C7 – underpins most of the composition, but Bra Tete juxtaposes unexpected harmonies, inserts linking sections, and enriches his voicings and upper structures with nods to his favourite U.S. pianists Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly.
