about

Dembese is another composition originally recorded in large ensemble format for the album Tete’s Big Sound. Dembese is the Zulu name of the composition’s dedicatee, guitarist Cyril Magubane. Bra Tete first met Magubane when they were both playing at the Batfair (initialese for the Bantu Trade Fair Association) in the mid-1960s and Bra Tete was playing with Early Mabuza’s Big Five on the Cold Castle stage. Other groups such as The Woody Woodpeckers also featured and Magubane was booked to play solo guitar in the intervals between sets. Bra Tete often joined him as he found Magubane’s guitar style particularly attractive, especially on standards, and they both ended up staying at Bra Tete’s place in East London so they could practice duo work inspired by the style of Bill Evans and Jim Hall.
